Welcome to Exceed onDemand, the Hummingbird ultra-thin connectivity solution. This stand-alone product delivers X11R6.6 X access with minimal overhead. A small client-side installation lets you access business-critical X applications on UNIX, Linux, VMS, and other X Window System hosts.
Typically, X clients communicate with X Display Servers to display the output and receive input. In the case of Exceed onDemand, X clients communicate with Exceed onDemand Proxy via the X protocol. In turn, Exceed onDemand Proxy communicates with Exceed onDemand Client via the Thin X Protocol (TXP).
A number of features ensure secure, consistent, and dependable X connections:
A host with 256 MB RAM and 140 MB of disk space is recommended. Exceed onDemand Server supports the following platforms:
A Pentium or higher with 64 MB RAM is recommended. Exceed onDemand Client, Server Manager, and Deployment Tools support the following Windows platforms:
Installing Exceed onDemand is a three-part procedure:
For installation procedures, see the installation chapter in the Exceed onDemand Administrator's Guide, or insert the CD and click How To Install in the Master Setup window.
This section describes the new features available for Exceed onDemand 4.5. For information on the features added in previous releases, contact your Hummingbird sales representative.
Exceed onDemand supports X Window System version X11R6.6.
Exceed onDemand now includes Exceed onDemand Deployment Tools, which consist of Exceed onDemand Deployment Wizard, Exceed onDemand Index Page Wizard, and Exceed onDemand Update Wizard. These tools let administrators manage web-deployable installations of Exceed onDemand Client, so that users can deploy the client from the Web.
The Exceed onDemand interface has been updated to provide easier accessibility to configuration profiles and options.
Exceed onDemand 4.5 now includes the following enhancements to optimize performance for fast and slow connections:
Chinese Traditional Big5 fonts are now supported by Exceed onDemand.
Exceed onDemand Server has been redesigned to maintain a <10% CPU load.
Exceed onDemand now supports multiple color depths when the Limit Window Exposure option on the Performance page of the Profile Options dialog box is selected.
If the host machine has more than one network card, and you are running in XDMCP Broadcast startup mode, then Exceed onDemand Server sends a broadcast to all the networks to which the network cards are connected.
Whenever you launch a new X session using a remote startup mode, Exceed onDemand searches for proxy connections that are owned by the same user. If you own one or more connections, then you have the option of reusing any of the connections to host your new session. Use the Reuse Sessions settings on the Communication page of the Profile Options dialog box to configure Exceed onDemand to prompt you for your selection, automatically select a connection, or to create a new connection for the X session.
Exceed onDemand now supports the migration of Connection Documents (.eod files) for Exceed onDemand Client and configuration profiles for Exceed onDemand Server.
Two additional global profiles for UNIX are now installed with Exceed onDemand: Global_xterm and Global_wm. Depending on the default profile selected, an xterm application or a window manager residing on the same UNIX server is launched.
The original Global_Default profiles for UNIX and Windows have been renamed to Global_XDMCP _Broadcast. You can access these default profiles from the Configuration Manager dialog box.
The Input page of the Profile Options dialog box now contains options for Windows modifier behavior. Using these options, you can assign Alt key sequences to either Microsoft Windows or X Windows. You can also define how Shift key sequences are interpreted by Exceed onDemand.
Exceed onDemand now has additional functionality for multiple window mode. You can specify how you want X clients to appear on screen using the Native Window Manager Focus Policy, Fit Window to Display, and Cascade Windows options. These options are available on the Screen page of the Profile Options dialog box.
You can also toggle between an X Window and Windows backdrop. To do this, click Tools, and then Toggle Desktop Backdrop on the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu.
The Server Files dialog box now includes a Date column that displays the creation date of files printed from an X application.
Each time you connect to a host using the REXEC, RSH, TELNET, SSH, Run Global Xinit, or Run Xinit startup mode, Exceed onDemand creates a remote command log file that records configuration information. By clicking Log Remote Command Host Reply on the Troubleshooting page of the Profile Options dialog box, you can set the remote command log file to also record troubleshooting information.
Exceed onDemand now supports OpenSSL 0.9.7c.
Exceed onDemand now contains options that let you configure OpenGL settings and enable GLX extensions. This functionality is accessible from the OpenGL page of the Profile Options dialog box. You can also log all OpenGL-related information for troubleshooting purposes by clicking the Log GLX Information option on the Troubleshooting page of the Profile Options dialog box.
Exceed onDemand Client now has additional printing functionality. You can simplify print job handling by automatically sending print jobs to the printer or by keeping a list of temporary print files in the Server Files dialog box. By default, these temporary files are discarded after printing. You can access these options on the Printing page of the Profile Options dialog box.
You can now install Exceed onDemand Server for UNIX using a platform-specific, self-extracting UNIX server package. Upon execution, files in the package are copied to a specified location, and installation begins automatically.
Exceed onDemand Server now supports port consolidation without the use of third-party applications such as SOCKS. All network traffic is automatically directed to a single proxy port, which is determined by administrators during installation or using the Exceed onDemand Server Manager. The default proxy port is 5501.
You can now edit the Global Xinitrc file using the Edit Global Xinitrc button in Exceed onDemand Server Configuration Manager.
Exceed onDemand Server Manager now lets you restrict the number of Exceed onDemand sessions a user can launch through use of the Maximum Number Of Sessions option.
Exceed onDemand Client 4.5 is compatible with Exceed onDemand Server 4.0, as is Exceed onDemand Client 4.0 with Exceed onDemand Server 4.5. However, it is recommended that you use the same version of Exceed onDemand Server and Exceed onDemand Client for optimal performance and feature support.
A single version of Exceed onDemand Client, which prompts you for information such as default language and installation location, now ships with Exceed onDemand.
This approach eliminates problems that can be caused by deploying different versions of Exceed onDemand Client on the same machine, as seen in previous releases of the product.
You can now select SSH as the startup mode for your X session. This mode is similar to the TELNET startup mode with the exception that after the X session has started, Exceed onDemand Server attempts to launch X clients from the host using the SSH protocol. You can access this functionality from the Communication page of the Profile Options dialog box.
You can now view the proxy and client log file directly using Exceed onDemand Client. If proxy logging is enabled, you can view the proxy log file (ewebhost.log) at any time by clicking File, View Log, and then Proxy Log on the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu.
To view the client log, ensure that logging is enabled on the Exceed onDemand Client dialog box, click File, View Log, and then Client Log on the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu.
Exceed onDemand now lets you edit the .xinitrc file, located in the user home directory, using the Edit Xinitrc button on the Exceed onDemand Configuration Manager dialog box.
Using the Copy X Selection To Printer and Copy X Selection To File options on the Edit menu of the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu, you can copy text, including those using CJK fonts, from an X client to a default printer or destination .txt file. You can also paste the contents of a .txt file to an X selection by clicking Paste To X Selction From File on the Edit menu of the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu.
You can now copy regions in an active client window to an operating system clipboard, a destination file, or a default printer. These regions can be pasted into any operating system-native application that supports pasting of graphics, or saved locally as a .bmp file. You can also print your selections by copying them to a printer. Use the Copy Rectangle or Copy All option on the Edit menu of the Exceed onDemand Desktop menu to copy your selections.
Exceed onDemand Deployment Tools consists of the following components:
Exceed onDemand Deployment Wizard now lets you save generated web packages as projects. When you create a package, Deployment Packager generates the package and saves its settings as a project, which can be reused at any time. By default, projects are saved as .edp files in the following location:
Packages are saved as a project folder (containing an .html file and a package folder) in the following location:
You can specify the following new deployment settings:
The Exceed onDemand Index Page Wizard is a new application that lets administrators create a single web page that contains links to existing deployment packages created in the Deployment Wizard.
You can specify the following on the index page:
After creating the index page, administrators can move the index page file (and all of the packages to which the index page points) to a web server and distribute the URL to users.
The Exceed onDemand Package Update Wizard is a new application that simplifies the task of updating Exceed onDemand Client versions within existing deployment packages.
With the Package Update Wizard, administrators can update a Client version within selected deployment packages without having to manually apply changes to each individual package. Updated packages are stored in the default directory.
When creating a package, administrators can now set the default language and select multiple languages to be available to end users.
Exceed onDemand now supports HTTP Authentication. When accessing Exceed onDemand deployment packages on a web server, you will be authorized using the HTTP Authentication protocol.
Exceed onDemand deployment packages can now be deployed over an HTTPS connection in addition to the HTTP protocol.
Exceed onDemand Keyboard Editor, XKeys, now supports macro functionality. You can use Keyboard Editor to create, import, modify, and save macros.
The following features have been discontinued in the version 4.5 release of Exceed onDemand.
Hummingbird Core Services is no longer a part of the Hummingbird Enterprise solution. As a result, Exceed onDemand now offers the stand-alone Exceed onDemand Server and no longer includes Hummingbird Core Services and Exceed onDemand Server for Hummingbird Core Services.
Since Exceed onDemand now uses its port consolidation feature to direct network traffic, socks.cfg no longer ships with the product. Support for socks.cfg, however, is still provided by Exceed onDemand.
In the event of a migration, and provided that you have an existing socks.cfg file, you can copy the socks.cfg file from your old data or user directory to the new data directory. Exceed onDemand then searches the file and attempts to establish connections using valid entries found in the file.
For more information on port consolidation, see Port Consolidation.
This section describes issues that Hummingbird is aware of at the time of release.
Exceed onDemand is limited in version compatibility in cases where the version number of the Exceed onDemand Client you are running differs from that of the Exceed onDemand Server. As a result, a compatibility warning appears on screen each time you connect to a host. This message also appears in the client and server log files.
For more information, see Version 4.0 Compatibility.
If you use Netscape 4.x to upgrade an Exceed onDemand 4.0 installation, your Connection Documents (.eod files) and socks.cfg file may not migrate successfully to the ...\4.50\Exceed onDemand\Client\data directory. In this case, you can find the missing files in the following directory:
where C:\ is the drive where Windows is installed, and current_user is the user name with which you log on to Windows.
When migrating Exceed onDemand 4.0 profiles, ensure that the password prompt on the TELNET page of the Startup Modes Setting dialog box is set to password: (ending with a colon) for all profiles that use the TELNET startup mode. Otherwise, the specified remote command will fail to run once your X session begins.
For public key authorization with keys that have a passphrase, type the passphrase in the Password box on the SSH page of the Exceed onDemand Startup Modes Settings dialog box, and specify the @p macro in the Optional Reply field.
The order in which you install and uninstall certain Exceed onDemand version 4.5 applications may result in the removal of HCDT registry entries. As a result, one or more of these applications may become partially or completely unusable.
This problem occurs when you install Exceed onDemand Client 4.5 and Exceed onDemand Deployment Tools 4.5 to a machine on which HostExplorer/HostAccess Services 9.0 has been installed. When you then uninstall HostExplorer/HostAccess Services, Exceed onDemand Client fails to run properly, and Exceed onDemand Deployment Tools is no longer able to create packages.
To solve this problem, reinstall Exceed onDemand Client 4.5 and Exceed onDemand Deployment Tools 4.5.
HTML documentation, such as online Help, cannot be viewed with Netscape 4.8 or lower. To view these documents, use an alternate browser. You can also view installation information in the product manual (PDF) provided on the CD.
If you uninstall Hummingbird Component Deployment Technology (HCDT), you must reboot your machine before reinstalling Exceed onDemand Client. Otherwise, Exceed onDemand Client will fail to run.
If you uninstall Exceed onDemand Client and then uninstall Hummingbird Component Deployment Technology (HCDT) on Windows Server 2003, Rundll32.exe crashes after you reboot your machine.
For SSL to work, ensure that the clock settings on the Exceed onDemand Server and client machines are set correctly. Improper clock settings (for example, wrong time zone or backdating) may cause problems when starting X sessions.
If you make any changes to the Use SSL Between Desktop and Proxy option on the Exceed onDemand Specific page of the Profile Options dialog box while running Exceed onDemand Client or Server Manager, then you need to restart Exceed onDemand for the option to take effect (even though Exceed onDemand indicates that only a server reset is needed).
If there is a firewall between the client machines and the Exceed onDemand Server site, the following firewall ports should be opened:
Note: |
The TCP ports are selected during server installation. |
Before performing Silent Typical or Silent Complete Installations from an SMS Server, you must specify your Exceed onDemand Server activation key.
To do this, open the Hummingbird Exceed onDemand Server.sms file, and search for the EOD_SERIALNUM=ActivationKeyPlaceHolder parameter in the COMMANDLINE that corresponds to your method of installation. Replace ActivationKeyPlaceHolder with a valid activation key, and save the file before continuing with the installation process.
For information, see the installation chapter in the Exceed onDemand Administrator's Guide, or insert the CD and click How To Install in the Master Setup window.
If you are running Exceed onDemand Server on a Solaris Intel platform, set the Close Timeout (sec) option on the Communications page of the Profile Options dialog box for the Global_wm profile to -1. Otherwise, the window manager, which is specified in the remote command, will automatically exit after 10 seconds.
To ensure proper Exceed onDemand Server performance on Windows, Hummingbird recommends using user names that contain no spaces.
You cannot install the Exceed onDemand Server component using a user account. You must install it using an administrator account.
For client installations using Netscape, do not close the browser before Exceed onDemand Client fully loads. Doing so results in EoDMigrateHelp.exe crashing, which, in turn, may result in incomplete migration of existing profiles. This has to do with Netscape prematurely closing objects that are being used by the EoDMigrateHlp.exe process.
If you use Exceed onDemand Client 4.0 with Exceed onDemand Server 4.5 to launch a profile that has the Reuse Sessions option on the Communication page of the Profile Options dialog box set to Auto or Ask User, and a running session is available for reuse, then that session is used to start the new X session. However, the Exceed onDemand Client dialog box remains open until you close it. You can close the dialog box once your X application has started.
If you have enabled X11 tunneling on the SSH page of the Exceed onDemand Startup Modes Settings dialog box, ensure that the specified remote command does not end with an ampersand (&). For example, to start an xterm after your X session begins, use the following syntax:
Occasionally, Exceed onDemand Client cannot remove some fonts from its font cache if the fonts are being used by another application or if Windows does not release them.
Exceed onDemand does not support the resuming of OpenGL applications. In effect, if you suspend a session in which one or more OpenGL applications are opened, and then resume that session at a later time, all but the OpenGL applications will be properly displayed on screen.
If you suspend a session that is configured to use truecolor or effective truecolor, and resume the session on a machine set to use 256 color, you will experience display problems. The same is true when sharing a session from one machine to another. When resuming or sharing a session, ensure that the session has an equal or higher color depth setting than the original suspended or shared session.
Certain X clients require that you configure Exceed onDemand to use the PseudoColor Visual, or they will draw improperly or not run. The default visual setting is Auto Select. If you are running in a TrueColor video mode and you run X clients that require the PseudoColor Visual, you must change the Server Visual Screen setting to PseudoColor. To do so, open the Screen page of the Profile Options dialog box, and select PseudoColor on the Server Visual drop-down list.
Netscape clients may occasionally stall when you launch Current User deployment packages on an IIS Server using HTTPS on Windows 9x/Me platforms.
Only administrators can install deployed clients using Netscape. If you attempt to launch Exceed onDemand Client using Current User deployment packages via Netscape, and you are not an administrator, then HCDT and Exceed onDemand Client do not start.
Connection Documents (.eod files) are not recognized by Windows NT 4.0 in cases where you are deploying Exceed onDemand Client without administrative privileges. The connection document context menu will not be accessible and Exceed onDemand will not launch as expected when you double-click the connection document icon. As a result, it is recommended that you open these files using the Open option on the File menu of the Exceed onDemand Client dialog box.
Exceed onDemand Deployment Wizard does not support new folder creation using the New Folder button in the Browse For Folder dialog box for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98.
This section amends errors and omissions in the documentation.
When performing a silent installation of Exceed onDemand Client 4.5, you also have the option of creating an Exceed onDemand Client shortcut on your desktop. Launch Setup Wizard from the command line using the following syntax:
where E:\ is the CD-ROM drive. Installation then proceeds to completion. For more information, see the Silent Installation section of the How to Install documentation.
